Guang Yun Gong Bing (广云贡饼) — A Legacy from Two Generations
This is a remarkable piece of PuEr history—a rare Guang Yun Gong Bing tea, preserved in Singapore through two generations of collectors. Originating from a time when tea exports from Yunnan were still heavily controlled, this tea represents an important transitional period in the development and globalization of PuEr.
A Must-Have PuEr for Aged Tea Lovers
Offering Yin Ji Cha (印级茶)-like aged flavor at the more accessible price point of a Chi Tse Beeng (七子饼), this Guang Yun Gong Bing is a true hidden gem—perfect for connoisseurs seeking aged character and value in one brew.
Historical Background: What Is Guang Yun Gong Bing?
Between the 1960s and 1970s, the demand for PuEr tea surged among overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. However, only the Guangdong Tea Import & Export Corporation held the export rights at that time. In response to rising demand, the company coordinated with Yunnan to source raw PuEr maocha, blending it with tea leaves from Guangdong and Guangxi to create a dark tea (Hei Cha) blend designed for export.
-
The higher-grade leaves were pressed into cakes for aging and storage.
-
The lower-grade leaves were sold loosely.
Because the raw material originated in Yunnan but was exported through Guangdong, these cakes were given the name Guang Yun Gong Bing (广云贡饼), and were easily recognized by their yellowish glossy wrapping paper, green-colored 中 character in the traditional "Ba Zhong Cha" logo, and clearly printed with:
-
“中国广东茶叶进出口公司” (China Guangdong Tea Import & Export Corporation)
-
“普洱饼茶” (PuEr Beeng Cha)
Additionally, it was during this time that Guangdong developed its own style of short-period wet piling (wo dui) fermentation, creating a distinctive Guangdong-style red-liquor PuEr, known for its rich, mellow, and layered taste.
A Private Singapore Collection
This particular Guang Yun Gong Bing comes from a private Singaporean collection, originally acquired by the grandfather of the current owner. With over four decades of careful aging, it has developed deep medicinal notes, camphor undertones, and a smooth, calming energy—rare traits that are typically only found in the finest Yin Ji teas.
