Mt. Ge Deng – A Rare Gem Among the Six Great Tea Mountains
Mt. Gedeng is one of the historic Six Ancient Tea Mountains of Xishuangbanna. Though the smallest in size among them, it holds a special place in tea history. Legend says Zhuge Liang buried a stirrup (“马镫”) here during his Southern Expedition, giving Gedeng its name.
Bordering Yibang, Manzhuan, and Mangzhi, Gedeng Mountain is known for its pristine ecology and limited ancient tree tea gardens hidden deep within dense forests. The area is difficult to reach and sparsely harvested, making Gedeng teas extremely rare and prized by true PuEr connoisseurs.
What Makes Gedeng Tea Special
-Location: Xiangming Township, Mengla County, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan
-Altitude: Mountainous and remote, with well-preserved ancient tea forests
-Heritage: Recorded in Pu’er Fu Zhi as having a “tea king tree” once worshipped by locals
-Production: Minimal yield due to hard-to-reach terrain and careful conservation
Tasting Notes & Tea Character
- Aroma: Subtle floral fruit notes with hints of plum, honey, and mild herbaceous undertones
- Taste: Thick, mellow, slightly bitter at first, transforming quickly into soft and persistent sweetness
- Texture: Full-bodied with silky structure and refined “texture” (vescosity)
- Energy (Qi): Deep and rising, offering clarity and strength over multiple infusions
Why Connoisseurs Love Gedeng
Gedeng is the secret weapon of experienced PuEr drinkers. While teas from Yibang are prized for fragrance, and Manzhuan for sweetness, Gedeng stands out for its concentration and depth. A tea with soul and stamina.
As described in the Qing dynasty’s Dian Hai Yu Heng Zhi:
“Of all the Pu’er teas from the six mountains, Gedeng ranks among the most powerful and pure.”
