Japan Nanbu Satetsu Tetsubin – Koizumi Nizaemon XI, “Katatsuki Tsutsu” (肩衡筒形)
With original signed wooden box | Made by 11th-generation Imperial Kettle Craftsman, Okamaya Koizumi Nizaemon
This exceptional piece is a Nanbu Satetsu (sand iron) tetsubin handcrafted by Koizumi Nizaemon, 11th generation, the last remaining imperial kettle maker from the prestigious 御釜屋 (Okamaya) lineage in Morioka. The “Katatsuki Tsutsu” model features a straight vertical body with distinctive brush-marked surface texture (刷毛目)—an aesthetic both rugged and refined, evoking the raw beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Made using high-grade sand iron (Satetsu)—the same precious material used in forging Japanese swords—this kettle delivers outstanding heat conductivity and water softening ability, producing water with an exceptionally smooth, rounded mouthfeel. Ideal for connoisseurs brewing aged PuEr or high-roast oolong, this tetsubin elevates the tea experience to another level.
The body’s design, simple yet deliberate, reflects the deep Wabi-sabi sensibility, while the brush-textured surface adds a striking sense of movement and tactility. The kettle is presented in its original paulownia wooden box, signed by the master himself, underscoring its authenticity and collectible value.
