Japan Nanbu Tetsubin – Koizumi Nizaemon XI, “Kokonoe Gata” (九重形)
With original signed wooden box | Handmade by 11th-generation Imperial Kettle Craftsman, Okamaya Koizumi Nizaemon
This beautiful Nanbu-style iron kettle, crafted by Koizumi Nizaemon, 11th-generation master of the renowned御釜屋 (Okamaya) workshop, represents the pinnacle of traditional Japanese ironwork. The model “Kokonoe Gata” (九重形) features a classic, full-bodied silhouette—generous, rounded, and quietly commanding in presence.
Its robust and unpretentious form embodies the spirit of Nanbu tetsubin: practical, grounded, and enduringly elegant. The surface showcases a subtly textured patina, offering both visual depth and tactile richness. Whether used daily to enhance the quality of water for tea brewing, or displayed as a collector’s item steeped in heritage, this piece brings equal value in function and form.
The kettle is made with precision and care in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, where Koizumi Nizaemon’s family has been creating ironware for over 400 years. As the only remaining hereditary imperial kettle maker, Koizumi’s works are highly sought after by serious tea enthusiasts and collectors alike.
This piece comes housed in its original kiri-bako (paulownia wood box), signed by the master, making it a superb gift or addition to any serious tea or Japanese craft collection.
