The Strength of Yiwu: Bold, Complex, and Rare
Nestled in the core of Yiwu Mountain’s famed “Seven Villages and Eight Settlements” (七村八寨), Ding Jia Zhai is one of the most revered ancient tea-producing areas in Yunnan. Home to some of the largest and oldest cultivated tea gardens of the Six Great Tea Mountains, it represents power, heritage, and finesse in one brew.
Why Dingjiazhai?
- Grown from ancient, hand-cultivated tea trees with 200–300 years of history
- Features thick, tightly twisted tea strips, gray-brown in color, with prominent silver buds
- Even as a young tea, it carries a hint of aged aroma, a sign of richness and good terroir
Tasting Profile
- Full-bodied and smooth, with a deep, penetrating throat-feel (喉韵)
- Fast-emerging Hui Gan (回甘) and lingering sweetness
- Structured, with clear strength and clarity
- Light floral notes underpinned by subtle aged wood and soft bitterness
A Hidden Powerhouse Among Yiwu Teas
Dingjiazhai has long been overshadowed by neighbors like Guafengzhai or Wanggong—but tea insiders know that its strength and richness often exceed them. In fact, due to its excellent structure and location, many teas from Dingjiazhai are rebranded and sold under more famous names. Its people—mostly from the Yao ethnic minority—are not just hardworking, but smart tea traders with a deep legacy.
For those who appreciate Guafengzhai’s elegance or Wanggong’s depth, Dingjiazhai offers a more robust, masculine counterpoint—truly the “tough guy” (硬汉子) of Yiwu.
