The Xi Shi teapot — originally called Wen Dan — is one of the most elegant and classic forms in Yixing teaware. Its name references the legendary beauty Xi Shi, with the form evoking soft curves and graceful proportions.

The lid represents fullness

The short, rounded spout represents her lips

The ear-shaped handle mirrors a delicate waistline

The body is rounded, soft, and balanced — ideal for mindful brewing

This shape was first perfected by the master potter Xu You-Quan 徐友泉, who was praised by scholar Wu Mei-Ding during the late Ming to early Qing period. Xu was a direct artistic descendant of the great Shi Da-Bin lineage, and his work is foundational in Yixing history.

Today, the Xi Shi, along with Shi Piao and Fang Gu, are considered essential classical shapes in any serious teapot collection.
